Welcome to the REME ATC

The REME Adventurous Training Centre (ATC)

Nestling high in the hillside of the picturesque hamlet of Gunzesried-Säge, the ATC is rented privately by Commander Equipment Support 1st (UK) Armoured Division for the benefit of REME Personnel. Due to the tax-free status of the facility, only those personnel entitled to tax-free concessions, posted to BA(G) or on officially authorised exercise are able to use the ATC. The facility is open to Adventurous Training groups for the majority of the year however for 6 weeks of the year, it is opened to families for the FAMSUM and FAMSKI packages.

Introduction

The REME ATC is situated at Gunzesried-Sage, in the heart of the Bavarian Allgau region. It provides an ideal blend of welcoming atmosphere, easy camaraderie and comfortable accommodation at an inexpensive price and is ideally suited for those seeking adventurous training facilities. You can enjoy the ATC experience whether you are travelling in a group as part of a military exercise or as a family group during our special family weeks.

The ATC provides an affordable base for those wishing to partake in Adventurous Training (AT) activities. In accordance with the Status Of Forces Agreement (SOFA) the ATC is maintained as a tax-free facility and as such prices are kept low.

Eligibility

Entitled visitors to the REME ATC include all serving soldiers participating in an official AT Exercise.

Due to the tax free nature of the ATC, only those families currently serving in BFG with tax-free status in accordance with SOFA are entitled to attend the family weeks.

Instructors

During the summer months, the resident Chief Instructor is on hand to advise and help you plan your daily activities. Units will be required to bring their own adventure-training instructors for all summer courses. Skiing instructors are available during the winter season at no extra cost to groups.

Insurance and Medical Insurance

All exercise commanders are strongly advised to make adequate insurance arrangements for the AT expedition in accordance with current regulations. Serving soldiers and their families on the strength of a unit based in Germany, who are on official leave, are covered for emergency treatment only. UK based personnel are to apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) prior to arrival which entitles them to medical treatment during a temporary stay in a foreign country.

Regrettably, we can no longer absorb cancellation costs; therefore adequate holiday insurance is strongly recommended, with minimum cover to include:

  • Third party liability for persons and property, including medical evacuation from ski areas (winter season only);
  • Medical cover for personal injury, medical expenses and repatriation;
  • Personal cover for belongings, property and cancellation for any reason.

Exercise Commanders Note

In addition to securing your booking for accommodation, all unit exercises must be cleared through the Adventure Training Group (Germany) (ATG (G)). JSP 419 lists the appropriate application forms, which must be submitted well in advance of the proposed visit. Further guidance if required is available from the Herford office.

Should you wish to make a booking or if you have any further enquires please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you

Clothing and Equipment

A recommended list of clothing/equipment required for adventurous training activities is show below, and is on page 6 of the information booklet.

It is beneficial to the individual to bring as much as possible from the listing. All specialist adventure training equipment will be provided by the ATC; however, individual unit requirements must be confirmed prior to arrival. Available equipment includes:

  • Kayaks, wetsuits, life jackets
  • Ropes & harnesses
  • Boots (walking, climbing "stickies")
  • Skis, boots and poles

Accommodation

Accommodation will be in small but comfortable 2 - 6 person bedrooms, all of which are furnished to a basic level and have wash basins. Bedding is provided, but visitors will need to bring hand and bath towels. Shower and toilet facilities are situated on each landing; therefore more modest individuals may also like to bring bathrobes, as there may be mixed sex groups in residence.

Meals

All catering is done centrally by the ATC’s chef. Each morning the staff will prepare a full continental breakfast to help you get ready for the day. All the ingredients required for your packed lunch are also laid out, enabling you to prepare the lunch of your choice. In the afternoon, (16:30) after a hard day’s adventure, you will be offered soup, tea, coffee, biscuits and cake to fill the gap before dinner. Our chef will prepare the evening meal, which is served at 18:00, allowing you to relax and re-live the day's activities.

For those on official AT the REME ATC is recognised as a Multi Activity Lodge (MAL) and you are entitled to claim CILOR for the period you are at the ATC. CILOR is only accepted using the Cash Free Messing system; units are not to bring cash CILOR. Full details of procedure for claiming CILOR can be found in JSP 456 Defence Catering Manual Volume 2.

Bar Facilities

The ATC bar stocks a full range of wines, spirits and local beers and is open daily from 17:00 - 18:00 and 19:00 - 23:40. These timings are strictly adhered to.

Telephone

Pay phones for guest use are provided and accept incoming calls on 08321 88836.

Travel

Arrival at the ATC should be planned for mid-afternoon on the first date shown on your initial booking correspondence. This allows time for individuals to settle in prior to dinner and the initial briefings. Departure should be after breakfast on the morning of the last date shown on your booking correspondence. Training activities will not be undertaken on arrival or departure days.

During courses, visitors must use their own transport for travelling to and from the adventure training areas for which route cards are provided. The route card at page 7 of the information booklet is shown below to assist you during the final stages of your arrival journey.

Winter Transport

Guests residing at the ATC during the ski season are advised to have winter tyres fitted to their cars prior to arrival in accordance with German law. It is also advisable to carry a set of snow chains in the vehicle at all times and have the car serviced before travelling to Bavaria, (anti-freeze mixture strengths checked to give protection down to at least -30Deg C).

No Smoking Policy and Fire Regulations

Due to the ATC being of wooden construction, and for the comfort of all guests, smoking is only permitted outside of the main building. Guests are asked to acquaint themselves, and their families, with the ATC fire orders upon arrival, copies of which are displayed in all guestrooms and at fire points throughout the building.

Pets and Animals

Due to the style of accommodation at the ATC, health and hygiene regulations and in the interest's of animal welfare, NO PET OR ANIMAL OF ANY DESCRIPTION is to be brought to the ATC. This rule is not negotiable. Personnel attempting to bring pets or animals to the ATC will have their booking cancelled.

Costs

Current prices are shown on the Rates page, but prospective visitors are encouraged to request the latest prices from REME Facilities Bavaria bookings clerk on Military (9)4882 3447. Prices include accommodation and full use of any training equipment (ropes, skis etc); during the winter months the charge also covers the cost of lift passes.

It is emphasised that Unit CILOR authorisation is required, in addition to this cost. Should CILOR not be available, an additional charge of €8.00 per soldier per day will be raised.
